Production Blog 5 - Sunshine RV

Hello everyone! Welcome to our fifth production blog of Sunshine RV. My name is Bryce and I will be showcasing our team’s amazing work they accomplished through sprint 5. As always, we will start with a refresher. Sunshine RV is a first-person simulator where players manage specific and time-sensitive orders from customers by buying wares and harvesting ingredients to brew various sunshine concoctions.

Our goal for this sprint was to have difficulty rising after completing so many drinks. Essentially, after you complete a certain amount of drinks, you will be able to unlock a new “branch” of orders you may receive. Tagging onto the goal, we wanted to get the animations rolling out as well. With that said, our team had a solid goal in mind, keeping in mind, we are coming down to the end. Our team was able to get many tasks done this sprint, so let’s get right into it.

Programming

Programming this sprint was great because we were able to build upon the core loop of the game and implement a new feature. As we built upon the core loop of the game, we implemented a system where orders get unlocked after completing so many orders. Additionally, the time to complete the drinks will be less and less. As I said, we implemented a new feature, that is the radio. Players will be able to listen to the radio as they make their delicious sunshine. As we have our sound designer making more songs, they will be added to the radio.

Modeling

Our 3D artists in this sprint were able to accomplish a lot. They modeled and textured props and main assets. I am truly proud of their work. One of the props being done was a lucky cat. We wanted it to have the gold look to it so it can signify to the player that they’re “lucky.” One major prop that looks great is the cash register. The cash register will be placed near the order window and as players complete orders, the sfx of “Cha-Ching” will happen indicating the order has successfully been completed. As we have NPCs in the game, they will be wearing clothes. The female clothes have been done, but the males, have been accomplished this sprint and look great.

 Level Design

As you may know, our game is limited to essentially one space, so placing props and other major assets isn’t difficult in that nature. However, in this sprint, we focused on placing the pieces together. Most of the 3D art is done so it was time to fill the RV. We’re essentially aiming for a dirty look so that’s what we did. Our level designer did a great job making it come alive.

2D Art

As time is of the essence, it is now time to get onto the poster and logo. During this sprint, our 2D artist was assigned to sketch out the logo and poster. They proceeded to go forward with the logo and fully complete it. For our logo, we had them come up with ideas so our game designer could choose which one was best. As that went on, we went on to different iterations and we can finally say, that Bootleg Studios has a logo.

Sound Design

Our sound designer has been doing a great job rolling out these songs. During this sprint, they completed a few songs, but we can now say we have our last and final country song. The plan was to have 5 total songs for the 3 genres, but due to time constraints, we turned it down to 3. With that said, please have a listen to country song #3.

Animation

When it came to animation, they did an outstanding job. I am truly proud of the work they accomplished because I believe players will enjoy seeing them. I am also pleased to say we have another animator on the team. One of our animators was tasked with completing the animation that pertained to customers walking to and away from the order window. As those and the arm-grabbing drink animations are done, we want to have animations occur in the background to show what customers are doing. So, we have fully completed an animation where a customer takes a sip and nods their head. Also, we have an animation where the customer takes a sip and soon passes out.

Conclusion

Wow, I am proud of our team’s work this sprint. With that said, we have officially completed sprint five. Our team has completed a total of 136 points out of 177 assigned. For our next sprint, our goal is to start implementing the animations and improve on features that already exist. As production goes on, we will continue to work hard on producing astonishing pieces of art. With that, I am looking forward to future posts about the production process and design of our game. We hope you enjoy it! Thank you!
