Production Blog #2
It's now the end of Sprint 2, and our team has made a lot of progress on Same Day Delivery! Lots of models, further progress in programming, and fun animations!
Programming
The models created for Sheldon and the Van were added into the game, and our programmers continued to mainly work on the controls during this sprint. Sheldon can now throw packages! Press and hold the left mouse button and a UI will pop up in the center of the screen. This charges the force of Sheldon’s throw, and also serves as a makeshift crosshair for aiming. Releasing the mouse button will fling the package, and the screen will shake slightly as a form of feedback. Work was also done to have a rough setup for the game flow using temporary UI screens. The player begins a level, then is shown a win/lose screen with stats, then the player is taken to the upgrades screen, and from that screen the player can start a new day. Funneling the player through the upgrades screen before being able to start again ensures they will be aware of the shop system. Right now, it is just simple buttons and photos that serve as stand-ins until we make menu art later in production.
Modeling
Fun NPCs have now been modeled that are meant to bring the town to life. There is a mix of both human and alien characters in this world, so the modelers had fun with their designs. The aliens are all very colorful with unique builds, and the humans have comically simple faces and wear space helmets. More environment props were made as well, such as a rocketship-style fire hydrant, an alien mailbox, garbage cans, and flimsy fences that Sheldon can run over in his van. Modular roads have also been made that will enable the level designers to easily snap together different shapes when building the town.
Animation
Sheldon has begun to spring to life with these fun animations! Sheldon now has a visual for idling, walking, running, and picking up packages. Sheldon is going to be racing around everywhere, so the goal was for him to appear panicked or out of breath in his movements.
Level Design
The level designers have been working to create small maps of different sections in the town in order to plan things out before placing everything in the level. As of right now, the level designers have created small test neighborhoods using the models made so far. There are lots of models and multiple level designers, so we are making sure things are working correctly before making large designs. It’s better to catch issues now rather than after an entire section of the town has been crafted.
Statistics
In order to playtest the controls so far, the programmers set up a build using the level designers' neighborhoods. The main playtest feedback we have gathered is that the Van controls need to be smoothed out a lot more, especially the way it feels to turn while driving. Overall for this sprint, 207 points were assigned and 158 were completed by the end of the two week period. This leaves our average velocity at 135 points per sprint. The goal for the next sprint is to get started on the upgrades system, make more props, and give all models LODs. Thanks for viewing our page! Check back soon for updates!
