Production Blog 5

Hi again! My name is Courtney, and welcome back to the fifth production blog for Entoworks! To give you a little refresher, let me remind you what Entoworks is all about. Entoworks is a lightweight turn-based strategy and tactics game where players will be challenged to best utilize their team of up to three entogear (robot bugs) to beat the enemy entogear on a variety of unique maps.

Our goal for this sprint was to complete the vertical slice of the game, which we completed successfully halfway through the sprint! Now that the pieces have been put together, the player can enter a level, attack, defend, move, and kill other units to win or lose all their units to lose. We’re very excited to show you all that work.

So, let’s take a look at everyone’s amazing work!

Modeling

As always, our modelers got a ton done this sprint! Michael worked on some more textures, mainly a microbial mat for the cave biome, and Kyle and Christian finished up the Crystal Caves and Abandoned Metalworks models. We’re excited to texture the last models in the next sprint and see all of these fun assets in the game!

2D Art

Lily did a great job this sprint making the application icon for our game. It is very exciting to see more and more 2D assets added to the game to make it look more polished! Jonathan worked on the Grassy Plateaus 2D map image and did a great job with creating a dynamic, vibrant cliff area. The level nodes we’ll be adding will follow an exciting pathway marked out by his design and we hope you will enjoy this little extra touch!

Level Design

This sprint, Micah and Ryan added all of the models and units to their numerous levels. Now the levels are almost completely ready for play and are working on being implemented into the game in their new versions! In the next sprint, they will be working solely on balancing their levels so that we can give you the most fun game possible!

Programming

The programmers kicked it into high gear this sprint and really carried the team. Marco, Owen, Isaac, and Christian were able to finish the vertical slice of the game so that it is completely playable from start to finish. They also began implementing some important feedback changes for the player such as a shaded region showing where a unit can move. Next sprint they will work on finishing up adding the last of the assets into the game and adding more feedback features such as a status window for units.

Animation

Jenny knocked it out of the park this sprint with her animating! As a new animator, Jenny made four animations for this sprint for the beetle and I’m really proud to show them off. Daisy as always made absolutely flawless animations for the dragonfly and just about finished off the animations needed for the game! Jay is in the same boat and has almost finished the bee so we’re excited to be reaching the end.

Sound

This sprint Patrick made his best sound piece yet! Patrick worked on an island melodic theme for the Salt Strands, it is perfectly tropical and upbeat for the biome. Next sprint, he will be working on adding some more button-clicking sounds so that different buttons will sound different and the player can tell them apart more easily.

Conclusion

Overall this Sprint we had 223 points assigned and completed a total of 138 of them making our current velocity 134.8 points/sprint. Next sprint, we will continue working on polishing the quality-of-life and feedback mechanics in the game such as a status window to explain unit stats to the player. Having the vertical slice done, we will mainly be adding art assets in the next sprint and bug fixing. The work displayed on this blog was only part of what got completed this sprint and I would like to thank my team for the great work they got done. We hope you’ll stick around and we’re excited to show you what we have in store in two weeks!

Thank you for reading!
