Designer Blog 1

Hello everyone! My name is Vitaliy Palnikov and I'm the Lead Designer for the game Gummy Gang! We have a team of 10 people total. After getting to know the team I believe we have a stellar team to get the job done. Gummy Gang is a local multiplayer co-op game of 2-4 players that fight it out in an arena, the last player standing wins the game.  These blogs will show the design and plan of the game, the vision I have for it.

Core Gameplay Loop:

An arena 2-4 player game, gummy cats fight inside of an arena/ map. The goal is to collect Candy, get enough candy to turn into a killer cat to gain the ability to eliminate other players from the game by charging into others. Players must run away from the killer cat and not touch it to stay in the game. Players will find candy on the map itself but it will not be enough as other players will also collect candy so you must fight for it. Players must obtain 70% of the candy on the map to turn into a killer cat.

Design Document:

A lot of time has been spent flushing out all the details of this game through the Design Document. This being what the game is, what the game loop is, what happens if this happens, what happens if that happens. Everything and anything regarding the detail of how the game will be is on the Design Document.

Current Level Concepts:

The goal is to have at least one playable level, but would like to have at least 3 if it all works out at least 3. During this project we had our level designer Victor work up some level concepts.

Using these level design concepts I created final themes for each planned level.

Map Themes:

Currently there are 4 map themes I came up with using the concept art that Victor created. The first is a map called "Chocolate Rapids" where the level is filled with chocolate rivers going through the map and changing over time. These rapids are a hazard for players. The second level is called “Candy Village” where the players play on a giant gingerbread man that's floating on a river of milk. Different parts of the gingerbread man will sink and rise, changing up the map during the match to create a dynamically changing map. The third map is called "Marshmallow Meadows" and adds verticality into the game where marshmallows are able to be touched that then bounce the player into the air to reach high areas of the map. Finally the final map is called "Frozen Peaks”. This is a map that has a lot of places to fall off the map, ice cream falls from the sky to create paths across cliffs but over time they will melt and disappear. This creates a constant flow of different paths which will be total chaos.

UI/UX wireframe:

Some time has been spent on doing the wireframe, which was completed using Figma. Since the game was relatively simple, the UI/UX was not all that vast. A lot of time was spent doing research and finding other games to find some reference and inspiration.

This is basically everything that the game needs in terms of menus. From the main menu to the player win screen. The whole shabang.

Art Direction:

Gummy Gang is a candy game, think of candy land. The themes, maps, and characters are all sweet treats; it's meant to be a cute game combined with mayhem.

The development of Gummy Gang has been going at a steady pace. Everyone on the team, 3D modelers, Programmers, Animators, a level designer, and a 2D artist are going at it and am excited to see how the game ends up.
